In a successful winter break from the ABASA league, the Asheville Wizards open division team won 2 prestigious titles. In January 2008, the Wizards participated in the 37th annual Tournament of Friends, hosted by Warren Wilson College at the Pepsi Indoor Soccer Center in Asheville, NC. After success in their 3 group games, the Wizards began a run in the playoffs around 6 PM on Saturday January 26. The Wizards met a tough squad of Charlotte Eagles players in the semi-final game, and won the game in the 3rd overtime. After the first overtime period, each team had to sit a player and play 4 v 4. During the 2nd overtime period, the Eagle's team (playing under the moniker, Woody for President) was forced to go an extra man down, as their goalkeeper earned a red card for a deliberate hand ball at midfield. So proceeding into the 3rd overtime, each team had to sit another player, and with the Wizards up a man due to the red card, they were able to seal the game with a 3 v 2 advantage. The Wizards met Kings College in the finals, and went up 1-0 early in the game. The score remained unchanged during a hard-fought game, until the final seconds of the game when Dustin buried a Paul Buckley cross to seal the game 2-0. Congratulations, young guys on winning 2 big trophies is as many months! |

Asheville Pizza Company was started in 1995 as a carryout/delivery shop on Merrimon avenue. In 1999 in a search for new space we moved into the former Merrimon Twin Cinema and added the brewery part of our business after we hired the brewer of Two Moons, Doug Riley. We changed the name to Asheville Pizza & Brewing Company and began showing $2 movies. In 2005 we moved downtown in an effort to expand our brewery business and opened Asheville Brewing Company at 77 Coxe Avenue. We feel extremely fortunate to be in Asheville and have had the support of this awesome town. We are very excited about joining forces with the Wizards.

After some disappointing results in overseas matches in Spain and England, the Wizards hosted its first international friendly on Sunday, March 2, against the members and crew of James Blunt's band, who is performing in Asheville on Monday night. The game started slowly with both sides feeling each other out. The 7v7 game opened up after a while, with both sides having many scoring chances. A couple of the visiting club showed some quality and a real understanding of the game. The Wizards benefitted from some subs and ran the game over in the latter stages. A visit to Cocula for some post-game refreshment followed and new friends were made. Good luck to the band and maybe we'll get a chance to share the pitch again on another tour. |
